DoxyPEP
In This Section
While doxyPEP is not yet available from the NHS, we are working towards being able to offer it from our service as soon as possible. In the meanwhile you may find this information page useful to find out more about Doxy-PEP and to consider how it may help you look after your sexual health and well-being.
What is Doxy-PEP?
Doxy-PEP (Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a pill taken after sex to help prevent sexually transmitted infections certain sexually transmitted infections. While not 100% effective, current evidence from clinical trials suggests that doxyPEP can prevent over three quarters (75%) of both syphilis and chlamydia infections.
Doxycycline is unlikely to prevent gonorrhoea infections because most gonorrhoea in the UK is already resistant to doxycycline.
By taking 200mg of the antibiotic doxycycline within 24 hours of having sex (or no later than 72 hours) This can help prevent infection by the bacteria that causes syphilis and chlamydia.
DoxyPEP is only effective in preventing these bacterial STIs. It will not prevent infection of viruses like HIV or hepatitis B. If you are concerned that there has been a risk of HIV exposure please see our PEP information page here
While doxyPEP is not available from the NHS currently, advice on where it can be purchased from is available in the Queer Health’s doxyPEP guide
