Letter of Competence in Intrauterine Techniques (LoC in IUT) – Individual Practical Training

These individual practical training sessions support the e-learning programme LoC in IUT (a competency-based training programme on the insertion and removal of intrauterine devices and systems (IUD/S) and management of common complications).

This training includes an element of gynaecological skills and practical intrauterine device fitting techniques. In order to receive a Letter of Competence in this area, participants must

a) Demonstrate their competence in the assessment of size, position and mobility of the uterus and investigation and management of potential IUD/IUS users with:

  • Abnormal findings at pelvic examination
  • Heavy and/or painful periods
  • Infrequent and/or absent periods
  • Vaginal discharge and sexually transmitted infection
  • Acute and chronic pelvic pain

Before or during the IUT training, the trainers may refer the candidate for further gynaecological experience if this is assessed as necessary.

b) Be observed fitting a minimum of seven intrauterine devices in patients who have agreed to take part in the training process. Participants may include a maximum of five satisfactory IUD/IUS insertions in patients that were supervised in previous training but any insertions carried forward in this way must be documented and signed off by the supervising doctor.

For more detailed information, please download the following document:Sheffield Guide to LoC in Intrauterine Contraception Techniques

The participant will be booked into three IUD clinics in our Central Clinic, to ensure that all devices have been covered. Practical training must continue until the trainer is completely satisfied with the level of competence achieved by the participant.
